miter box housing (cleaned for inspection)

Here she's ready for some sand blasting. Once you get all the crud out and off of things you can inspect them for cracks and excessive wear. Now its time for a little bead blasting.

Miter box dissassembly

Once the auxiliaries are out its just a few bolts holding each front and rear bearing housings in and the drive will come out. Now to get rid of the crud.

miter box dissassembly

Then I removed the Moreflex assemblies off of each end with the internal drive attached. The plate on the top was just an access plate nothing exciting there.

miter box

First thing was to pull out the drives out of each side.

Miter box pre repair

I haven't found one thing on this bus that wasn't plum worn out and the miter box was no different. It needed bearings and seals and of course while I'm at it I will clean it up and get some paint on it for protection from the elements.

Wiper arms

Once the motors were in place it was just a mater of bolting on the arms. I still have to put on the washer fluid container but that will have to wait till I get the skin on the inside of the front spare tire bay.

Wiper motors

Next I laid out the location of the wiper motors (one for each side) and installed them through the front wall of the bus.

Mounting front electrical panel

I first laid out the position of the studs. I used inverted 3/8 grade 8 bolts and welded the heads to the backside of the 11 gauge electrical box. Then painted everything and bolted in the new panel.

headlight buckets

This is the miracle of bead blasting or sandblasting. The bucket on the right looked just like the one on the left before I sandblasted it. There is no paint or primer on it yet. I Hadn't done the housing as of this photo but afterwards I did and found a couple of small rust pits that got through the metal. I took some lead and heated it and smeared it around to cover the holes the ground and sanded it smooth afterwards.

Cooling fan drive shaft (paint and assembled)

New u-joints grease fittings and some paint and she's ready to go back on the bus. After the motor goes in this spring of course.

Drive shaft for cooling fan

This is just after I got the half a inch of grease off of the drive shaft. Soon after I bead blasted the parts. Before I took the shaft apart I marked all the parts with a punch so as to get the shaft assembled back in its original position to keep its alignment for balance. I am hoping that the mechanics before me have done the same. If not ill take the shafts back off the bus and have them balanced.

Complete electrical panel (front)

All wires on these boards now.

Front electrical control board

I was able to buy all the parts for my new front control panel from Car Quest. I have assembled them an a sheet of aluminum 90 thousandths thick sized to fit in the box I welded up out of 11 gauge steel. I covered the aluminum with a sheet of white Formica to help reflect light as to see to diagnose problems at night. Hopefully there wont be any but you never know. I bench tested all the circuit's and they all checked out first go around other than I had to hook up a marker light to the turn signal circuit to get it to blink.
