Making a radiator mount from scratch

First I cut a length of five inch by 1/4 inch steel to the length of the radiator plus the opening. Then I laid out and drill the hole pattern per the bolts in the sides of the radiator. Eight in each side.

engine

Sometimes the camera will flash and sometimes it doesn't the darker color red is normal and the orangey color is from the effect of the flash. Its all the same color, Cummins red.

engine right bank

engine paint

Got a set of valve covers off of Mannys old dd

They had green, gold, blue, gray ,and silver paint on them. I bead blasted the paint layers off and painted them flat black. Then I scuffed off the paint on the raised areas.

After a lot of searching I found a crankshaft hub.

Added a 740 Allison transmission.

CHROME

I had some parts chromed for the back (front) of the engine. here are some of them.

Fresh engine block from the machine shop

I found this photo of the block just after it came back from the machine shop. I couldn't help but mock up some of the parts I had painted on it.

Painting

I found out pretty quick to paint one of these beast they have to be assembled then painted. still I chose to paint what I could while it was apart then just paint what I had to after the fact.

Oil pan

The oil pan was quite a chore to clean and sandblast since it wouldn't fit in my parts blaster. But here its is clean and painted for now.

A pair of heads is better than none!!

I shipped the two heads out to Arizona to have the shop that Clifford Allen recommended rebuild them. Course putting them all back together happened here in the garage. Adjusting the valves wasn't to bad but I had some experience with that on gasoline engines that I have rebuilt in the past.
I disassembled the blower I took off of Mannys engine and cleaned, bead blasted, and painted it after putting in new bearings and seals.
I tore down, cleaned, sandblasted, and painted the engine mounts and rebuilt them with new rubber I beams from Jeffersons.
I love how clean she is cause I know how little this will last.

motor

I am starting the reassembly of the engine here. This photo was from sometime last winter spring.

New life in an old two stroke

I don't care if you like a two stroke or not but have to like a clean diesel engine cause you know that they ain't going to be that way long...... lol .......

Engine block after machine work

After I got the block back from the machine shop I masked and painted all the little crevasses I could and painted them knowing I would never be able to get protection on them once I reassembled the engine.

gear train housing after

I had to send this housing out and have a bolt removed that was sheared off and to have the face of the starter mount trued and honed. Then I thoroughly cleaned it, masked it and painted it with the Cummings red paint.

after degreassing

After dis-assembly it took a heck of a lot of cleaning to get to this stage. I took the complete motor apart and degreased every part for inspection. Good parts were tagged for restoration and bad parts that couldn't be bought new I found rebuild able used ones to replace them with. One that comes to mind was one side of the thermostat housing with a crack in it. Now let me assure you though, every moving part of this engine was replaced with new parts with no exceptions.

after restoration engine pics

It took a long time for each part of the engine. It was a prime project for the cold winter months till a big job in the cabinet shop took me away from it.
oil cooler housing after cleaning and bead blasting.
heres the back section of the oil cooler after I cleaned, bead blasted and masked it for paint.

Boy what a messy job. Now shes ready to go to the machine shop for a caustic bath and some machine work. I am going to have them reinstall the crank and pistons cause turning this beast over here in my little shop could be disastrous or even fatal. I'm crazy for sure but not stupid.
Over the winter I am going to restore the 8v71 and paint and chrome it out. Total rebuild back to factory specs or better. I am tired of wondering what engine to put in so I am just going to pimp out the ole two stroke and enjoy the ride.
mounting ring for bogie spring before restoration.
